Domestic Bliss

June 5, 2014

360 degrees 1650 h x 103 cm d low res

Deakin University

5 June to 12 July

Featuring the work of Katherine Hattam, Elizabeth Gower, David Ray, Yvonne Kendall, Hannah Bertram, Donna Marcus, Honor Freeman, Lucas Grogan and others, this exhibition explores the way artists have responded to the notion of the domestic space and traditional domestic roles. Through an often playful materiality, these artists have reinterpreted the all-familiar, private spaces we inhabit and the objects that we share them with and ask, what do we garner from noticing, subverting or even celebrating the everyday? Includes works drawn from the Deakin University Art Collection, private collections and newly commissioned works.

Curator: Emma Cox, Deakin University.
Curator talk: Wednesday 4 June, 5.30 pm
Exhibition launch: Wednesday 4 June, 6.00 pm

Memory Fragments, by Marita Bullock

Published by Intellect Books, 2012

Taking as its starting point four contemporary visual artists whose work utilizes the conventions of museum display and collecting practices, Memory Fragments examines how these artists have reconfigured dominant representations of Australian history and identity, including viewpoints often marginalized by gender and race. Echoing Walter Benjamin’s reflections on history and time, this interdisciplinary volume will be of interest to scholars working in the arts as well as modern and postmodern cultural studies.

Featuring Donna Marcus, Ricky Swallow, Ah Xian & Julie Gough.

Revisiting the City – Naples

March 4, 2012

2011 Naples- the city revisited

Revisiting the City – Naples (An adjunct exhibition in response to Now and When – Australian Urbanism),

Gold Coast Art Gallery, 26 March 2012 – 1 May 2012

Donna Marcus was invited to respond to the aerial night-time Now images to produce a new wall sculpture that drew from an earlier series of work Cities that she had undertaken in the late 1990s. This new work is much larger than these earlier works at almost three metre square and features 81 brilliant red aluminum pans, jelly moulds, lids and steamers.

In assembling the elements in a precise gird on the wall, Marcus references the traditional city grid as seen from above but which also she suggests ‘the grid becomes a device that allows in both art and life, the layering of junk – the detritus of the home, seemingly bringing order to chaos.’

Holmes has collaborated with a vast number of artists over this period on a broad range of curatorial projects. The few selected for this exhibition each represents a specific journey which weaves a particular personal interplay of history, theory and practice – a synthesis that Holmes has espoused and advocated throughout his distinguished teaching, research and administrative career.

Slip

Dianne Tanzer Gallery, Melbourne, March 2011

Slip is the first extensive exhibition of ceramic work that Donna Marcus has been developing for past two years. Slip is a reference to the slip casting process but also idea of slippage between the kitchen, bathroom and laboratory in the materials and aesthetics of these pieces. Glazed in the colours of old bathrooms; black, pink, buttery yellow, white and green, they continue Marcus’ interest in the strong links between memory and colour in the blurring and overlap between the domestic and industrial aesthetic.)

Ascorbic

Dianne Tanzer Gallery, Melbourne, August 2009

Ascorbic continues Marcus’ interest in everyday objects that she uses as modules to build sculptures in which the original object remains both recognisable but oddly transformed into a new form. In Ascorbic a found form, a lemon squeezer, is enlarged, cast it in vitreous porcelain, and then twelve of these custom-made components are joined together to produce a work that combines both the aesthetics of the natural and industrial worlds (Ascorbic is strangely reminiscent of anemone, seeds and pods, things found along the shore). Vitreous porcelain makes an ironic reference to the most historic Readymade, (Duchamp’s Urinal) and more generally to the aesthetics of the bathroom and the twentieth century obsession with clinical hygiene. In Ascorbic the kitchen and the bathroom, normally entirely separate provinces, are joined in an uncanny confluence of the material and form.

Project in collaboration with Simon Laws

In the tradition of improvised domestic garden ornamentation and ‘big’ tourist attractions, this project involved the scale up of the once common car tyre swan to a 3 tonne used truck tyre. Two opposing 40 tonne mining trucks were used to turn the tyre inside out, necessary to achieve the transmogrification from beast to beauty.
